Marches Hour: Getting your business noticed in Herefordshire and neighboring counties

Marches Hour is a website and Twitter platform for businesses, entrepreneurs and third party organisations based in Powys, Monmouthshire, Shropshire, Ludlow, Presteigne, Shrewsbury, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. By using #MarchesHour on your tweets you can enter the chance to have it retweeted by @MarchesHour which will then expose your tweet to this specific geographical location. It’s a tool to connect local businesses to each other.

There are occasional meet-ups to network, meet new people and highlight your business. Meet ups are posted on Facebook.com/MarchesHour; www.MarchesHour.co.uk and of course on Twitter @MarchesHour. Its aim is to get your business noticed!


#MarchesHour at the Café is a free, informal networking for small businesses, organisations, charities and individuals in and around Hereford. It offers followers of #MarchesHour the opportunity to extend their interaction beyond the limiting 140 characters allowed by Twitter, to a more personal face-to- face interaction.

You can use #MarchesHour at the café as a platform for a new product launch or to announce a community event. You can also get to know the faces behind Herefordshire twitter accounts you follow or those that follow you at a #MarchesHour @ the café event.

As a Herefordshire Writer I feel one of the best features of this county is our food! We have so many great cafes and restauarants to choose from and it’s guaranteed to release the glutton in you. This Bank Holiday we had the pleasure of a foodie frenzy weekend by way of Hereford Indie Food Festival! This Festival celebrates Hereford’s Independent food culture and is formed by the team behind “A Rule of Tum” Jon Stead, Edwin and Dorian Kirk.

Queues abounded on The Shack Revolution’s pop-up cocktail stall. Many of you will be familiar with brothers James & Rich Manning who started The Shack Revolution bar located in Bastion mews. Their farm-made boutique and bespoke bars pop up everywhere around the country from Weddings, corporate events and even Wembley Stadium and football clubs! They also provided some live acts via their Shackoustic Sundays spot attached to their drinks booth.

Next time you’re on a night out in Hereford, visit their bar for pizza, beer or cocktails!

The festival culminates into a Bohemian foray beginning with Makers Market stalls upon entry. Then as in a restaurant you are tempted with a starter: some nibbles (Goat’s cheese from Neal Yard’s Creamery?) and drinks from cider to cocktails. Finally you make your way through the leafy archway into the street food arena….

The outdoor dining areas had a wonderful communal feel and many visitors from outside our county had come over for Bank Holiday weekend.

I really wished I’d gotten The Chefs supper tickets at the Bookshop. Also I didn’t get around to staying on into the night so missed the music acts!

King Street Kitchen Team

As I have such a sweet tooth my first stop was at the King Street Kitchen stall where I purchased a salted pistachio brownie (made with coconut flour) and tried the gigantic chocolate, caramel and pretzel cake which was divine!

The Beefy Boys Stall

It was absolutely jam-packed and the unusually rainy weather couldn’t deter us from this gourmet gathering. All in all an excellently executed collection of music, food, fresh produce and creativity. It was a pleasure to be in attendance this year and I look forward to returning again next year!

Workshop Overview: Digital Guide to Internationalize.

There were a total of 5 workshops though I only atteneded 2 by happenstance so I can only comment on the final two courses I attended.

The workshop is in some ways as overwhelming as the title “Digital Guide to Internationalize” sounds. The two workshops I participated in pertained to the Advertise hosted by Teresa Gualtieri and Analyse segments run by Sarah Lumley-Holmes. Essentially it’s a step by step guide to using Google Analytics.

Google Analytics tracks and reports website traffic i.e. the viewers of your site, where they come from and what search terms they keyed in to land on your website.

I had a gist of what this Google service was about but had to listen intently at the workshops. These workshops are so important for businesses of any size that require sales abroad. In some respects “internationalize” online may sound far fetched but it’s not just a concept for big businesses, smaller businesses such as Etsy shop owners would find such a course useful. Businesses require customers and where we are currently geo-tagged does not have to be our only customer base we can reach so many more people and this series of workshops show you how.

Suffice to say the terms and concepts discussed in this series from SEO, mobile advertising and geo-targeting are growing business terms that will become equally as impactful  as ROI, overheads and P&L. In a growing online business world the need for warehouses, rent and staff can lessen significantly.

We so often take “Social Media Marketing” for granted as we use it daily for our own personal needs. Yet if studied it can be harnessed potently for businesses of any size and we must endeavour to learn more about it as there are potentially maybe millions of customers up for grabs online.

If the cycle of classes were to run again I’d happily do the whole series over.

As always attendees receive the slideshows to take home. It’s quite a challenging course to grasp because we’re fundamentally attempting to assess people’s digital behaviour, people who potentially live in various countries and from differing cultures. It’s a lot to try to analyze but it’s a valuable lesson to learn as this is the next frontier in business.

Marketing Fundamentals Workshop, Skylon Court, Rotherwas Hereford

In the newly opened Skylon Court I found this workshop via Hereford Business Solutions Centre. This location is sleek, spacious and provides places to rent for office use.

Here is an overview of the key points discussed as well as my own notes from the exercises we did. Notably this was a 2 hour free workshop on Friday 27th May 2016 12-2pm.

Key Points:

  • Cultivate an elevator pitch meaning a short soundbite that accurately and effectively describes what your business is. The term derives from the scenario where one is in a lift with someone whereby you only have 30 seconds to inform and impress someone about your work. It should only be a few sentences around 30 sec – a couple minutes to utter.

Application:

I brought my Hello Kitty A4 notepad and gave a scribble of my thoughts. We were advised to keep the following in mind in order to fully assess all the components of our business/work and then streamline it into a en elevator pitch.

  1. Assess everything you do in company/work.
  2. Explain how your company/work benefits people.
  3. What would people like about what you do?

I jotted down these answers:

1- I write and sell multi-genre fiction and non-fiction books for young adults with a creative, caring and sharing perspective.

2- Help people feel less alone and feel connected and inspired through literature.

3- People like my honesty, creativity and enthusiasm.

They also suggested creating an alternative pitch if you customer based is mixed e.g. age/country/gender.

  • It was suggested to have the Company’s Marketing account emails under Gmail as it can be linked to Adwords and Mailchimp accounts and as it’s a Google ‘product/service’ it ranks better with SEO (Search Engine Optimization.)
  • They also stressed the importance of having a LinkedIn account.

Tips about building/maintaining your website(s).

Include a page that fully explains 1) What you do? 2) How you help people? 3) How to contact you?

They mentioned “Google Search Console” which helps determine how your website works i.e. keywords used to find your site. (I had never heard of this Google tool before so that was useful to discover.)

There was an activity where the websites of a couple attendees were put on the screen so they could get feedback on where their sites may require tweaking to improve it’s SEO and tips of that nature. 

It does not apply to my line of work but Herefordshire businesses would be advised to be have a Google Business page i.e. so when a search enquiry is Googled such as “Hereford cafe” you see those search entries of a business with ratings and link on Google Map presented first.

Final notes:

  • All company/business LOGO/PHOTOS/VIDEOS be kept in a x1 folder on computer
  • Cyber security tip, share info on two mediums. E.g. if hiring a web designer to change site and they require login send username on email and password on another platform e.g. mobile text! (Excellent tip!)
  • Attendees also emailed the presentation slides too!

So all in all I was pleased with what I’ve learnt at the workshop and it’s all very relevant and accessible to use for my creative business as an author. Lunch was also provided and it was scrumptious. A relaxed, informative and very helpful workshop that i would recommend for others to attend.

Catherine Vaughan Book & Poetry Reading at De Koffie Pot March 3, 2016

Arriving slightly late to the reading by Catherine Vaughan,  I can’t help but feel anxious that I missed out on of some of this lady poets carefully crafted outpouring, and the whimsical and energetic approach in which she passionately read through her material.

I arrived to an aptly poetic atmosphere; the room was beautifully lit with candles illuminating the oak beams on the ceiling, and the tables almost completely packed with humans keenly hanging on to every word. Catherine had reeled them in, I would be next.  De Koffie Potholds many events in this room on the first floor of the converted stables nestled alongside the River Wye.  A charming setting difficult to parallel in the city unless you boast any sort of river front property.

Food review: Wok & Rice, Hereford

I’ve been going to this Noodle & Rice Bar since Summer 2015 and I order the same dish every time: Egg noodle, Delhi sauce (chili, garlic and coriander) plus veg and Tiger prawns. It is a generous serving and delicious- I’m addicted. It is located on 57-59 Commercial Rd, Hereford HR1 2BP down the hill from the Sixth Form. Definitely recommended!

It is open 7 days a week from 12:00pm – 11:00pm

Food review: The Burger Shop, Hereford

Above is the Farmer Tom’s beef burger: Hereford Beef Patty, Mature Cheddar, Dill Pickles, Mustard Mayo, Ketchup, Baby Gem, Brioche. It sounds a good choice along with the rosemary salted chips it looks pretty good. The Burger shop at Aubrey street sells burgers only, its website looks fantastic its instagram page is chic but the beefy patty’s wasn’t as juicy as expected, but then it was my first ever visit. All in all worth a visit on the chilly Christmas Eve I went in to visit. It is under a brand called “A Rule of Tum.”
